
William (“Bill”) Norris Cox, III died September 25, 2024 from complications of kidney cancer in Chattanooga, TN at the age of 83.
Bill was born November 22, 1940 in Wilmington, DE to William Norris Cox, Jr. and Madalyn Forest Cox, and the family moved to Atlanta, GA when Bill was young. Bill graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1958 and from Georgia Tech in 1962 with a B.S. in Physics. After graduating, Bill served as an officer in the US Navy until 1964 when he left to pursue an economics degree at Rice University in Houston, TX. He worked for the Federal Reserve in Atlanta until 1984 when he left to start a consulting business directed at credit unions. He later worked for USAID in Latin America and the Balkans.
In 1995, Bill retired to Carroll County, GA and participated in many community-based organizations there. In 2016, he moved back to the Atlanta area and continued his interests in community service and meditation, eventually joining the Atlanta Friends Meeting. In 2023, he moved to Chattanooga to enjoy the smaller community and the natural beauty of the area.
Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dianne Hunter Cox; his son, David Cox, daughter-in-law, Melissa Stanford, and David’s children, Sara Dianne Cox and Grace Bartmes-Cox; and his daughter, Susan Loper and her family, Chris Loper, James Loper, Wendy Suen, and Lian Loper.
