Last week while the CSA program was on vacation, I went to the Powder Springs Farmers’ Market. Here’s what I got.
- raspberries $5
- garlic $1
- green tomatoes $4
- yellow squash $4
- purple potatoes $4
- tamales $5
It was fun, but I like my CSA box better than shopping on a regular basis.
Stir fried squash
So far, all the squash has been stir fried according to this recipe. Winter savory is a great addition to this dish! Just use a bunch of chopped leaves in place of the pepper.
Fried Green Tomatoes
I fried two of the green tomatoes before they started turning. (The other three are now on their way to becoming non-vine ripened tomatoes.) This is my second time frying green tomatoes, and it’s really not that hard. Dip slices in buttermilk and then in cornmeal with pepper and salt. Fry three minutes on each side and drain. Pretty cool!
Potato Arugula Au Gratin
I used the purple potatoes (tossed with flour), onion, goat cheese, milk, garlic and some of last year’s arugula from the freezer to make an au gratin.
I sautéed the onions and garlic and then added everything else. At the last minute, I put some salt in thinking that potatoes need salt. (It turned out a little too salty for my taste.)
I cooked it until the goat cheese melted and got bubbly. Then I topped it with Asiago and put it in the oven for about half an hour.
Not bad – and I used something from the freezer!
