Hi there Susan! I happened across your site when I was looking for a rough idea of how many apples makes 5 lbs. (Google "5 lbs of apples" and your apples are one of the first results!) I always like to investigate the site where an image I was looking for comes from. Fortuitously, I have a blog very similar to yours. I document what I get in my CSA share in attempts to get other people into the idea of CSA and getting more familiar/appreciative of their food and where it comes from (with lots of props to the farmers! They are rockstars to me!). I also do my best to give general recipe ideas (I'm more of an experimenter than a recipe follower) and make them look good for the camera, which is hopefully another way to get people into it. I haven't dug way into your blog yet, but I like what I see so far and I'm sure I'll get some nice ideas out of it. Peace and greetings from up north!

No, I haven't! I've always lumped mashed cauliflower with those recipes where people try to "pass something off as..." But clearly you like it for itself, so I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Susan,

Have you ever tried mashed cauliflower? Steam it and then mash it like potatoes with a bit of cream cheese, butter and/or half and half. Season with salt and pepper. This is my absolute favorite and I will eat it before mashed potatoes any day of the week!

Hi, Nancy,
Scroll down http://ansonmills.com/rice.htm to read about Sea Island Red peas. It says they are a heirloom variety of field pea. I guess since peas have been cultivated in South Carolina for centuries, it makes sense that there are a bunch of varieties. Maybe on the islands, the varieties would have been even more distinct because of the isolation. Just guessing, though!

we were arguing over supper tonight about "cow" vs. "sea island" peas! They look the same to me! I was raised in upstate So. Caro. on cow peas, and you are calling them sea island peas. What's the difference? It's hard not to call a pea a "field" pea since 99% of all peas are raised in fields, or have I missed something...? But, we do refer to these tasty (my favs) peas as field peas, also, but, certainly not Sea Island peas. Maybe there is a slight flavor difference if something is raised on or near a marsh that has a higher salinity in the H2O? nancy

Hello and thank you for reporting about of all your csa goodies. You take great pictures and have wonderful cooking ideas.
I am thinking of joining Farm Fresh. Are you writing about a standard csa delivery or do you get the extra gourmet deal?

Mmm... fresh bread!

Fennel's not on my hate list. Maybe some day, but as long as my neighbor enjoys it, I'm okay. It's fun to give stuff to other people. And fun neighbor reciprocates with cooked and baked treats!
